Curdies River Pipe Bridge Coating Refurbishment
Curdies River Pipe Bridge located in Western Victoria provides the area with a major conduit for water. McElligotts were contracted by Wannon Water following a public tender to undertake this challenging coating refurbishment project. Both the arched bridge supporting the pipeline and the pipeline itself are the main elements in the scope of work.
The steel structure and pipe were fully abrasive blasted and painted with a traditional 3 coat system inclusive of zinc rich primer, an intermediate high build coat of epoxy followed by a topcoat of polysiloxane. It looks great and will protect the structure for many years to come. This will be the case more so when it is fully completed. Floods which were in fact anticipated by the locals interrupted our progress. The area is subject to the type of flooding depicted in the attached photo. Also included in the scope of work was the refurbishment/replacement of the pipe saddles and replacement of the hanger rods and turnbuckles.
McElligotts extensive history of working on bridge structures over water meant that the challenges of this project were well understood. The project required stringent environmental controls which were facilitated with the structural elements to be treated being fully scaffolded and encapsulated with specialised sheeting. Attached to the containment was dust extraction equipment to ensure dust was maintained to an absolute minimum. All debris from the surface preparation and paint removal process was fully captured for collection and disposal offsite in accordance with EPA requirements.
