Application of Fireproofing Coating to M80 Greensborough Existing Rail Tunnel – Rail Occupation

McElligotts was recently engaged by M80RRA (Acciona) to undertake the surface preparation and application of a passive fire protection coating to the soffit and walls of a 145m section of existing concrete rail tunnel.

Surface preparation of the concrete in accordance with CSP5 standard was achieved, followed by the application of 44 tonnes of fireproofing material, applied to achieve a dry film thickness of 9mm. The fireproofing material was applied with high end plural component system which was technically challenging to operate but it delivered the required outcome.

Soffit joints were sealed and meshed prior to final coating.

The works were undertaken during the rail occupation between the 16th and 21st of October over 2 shifts.

There was a total of 26 RIW and SWRC trained workers involved in this time critical activity.

The fireproofing paint supplier provided the necessary training for the application of this very specialised coating prior to commencement on site.

Following some initial challenges McElligotts were successful with the execution of this scope of work within the occupation program.

All levels of the business inclusive of management, supervision, EHS, Quality and our teams of blaster painters at the coal face contributed as one to deliver this key project.

McElligotts’ Vic team received great support from Acciona our client as well as our suppliers Akzo Nobel and Blast One who’s teams were fully engaged with the project.
