Consistent with the desire to maintain Melbourne’s heritage and in conjunction with the staging of the Commonwealth Games, McElligott Partners won the contract to fully refurbish the Heritage listed Sandridge Railway Bridge. The upgrade including bridge survey, sandblasting and repainting, repairs to structure, removal of redundant structure, installation of structural steel ramp supports, installation of precast concrete floor planks, necessary footings, electric lighting, including poles, general power, hydraulics, glazed screens, and the 12 piece travelling metalwork art installation representing the history of Australian immigration.

High level containment was required during paint removal given existing paint was lead based.

Three different coating systems were specified - one for the cast iron balustrade, light fittings/poles, & façade, one for the structural wrought iron girders and one for areas where there were cracks and seams, transition areas or areas where blasting cannot be carried out.

The company won the Lord Mayor’s award for the quality of work and the enhancement the final product made to the Southgate precinct.
