The Princess Bridge on St Kilda Road is both of historical significance and a tourist attraction within the City of Melbourne. The repainting of the bridge along with the existing lead paint removal was one of the most high profile jobs undertaken by McElligott’s and the level of public interest extremely high.

The environmental monitoring plan was a crucial part of the program with containment system design critical to managing the emissions such that there was no risk to workers on the project, adjacent workers and the general public.

Different coating systems were used for structural wrought iron, cracks and seams, light fittings, crests and coat of arms and the likes of removable items.

The principal structural members of the bridge are constructed from riveted wrought iron with a cast iron façade. The project involved, not only complex cleaning and painting, but also strengthening of structural components found to be deficient and including replacement of existing rivets with high tensile bolts at lattice top and bottom connections and replacing missing or corroded rivets from the main girder.

McElligott’s and its client, The City of Melbourne, are particularly proud of the finished job.
