The project was to repaint the North Bourke Bridge over the Darling River in North West NSW.

The bridge was primarily steel with 6 steel piers, 2 of which were located under the lifting section of the bridge. The total bridge length was 198 metres including metal trusses, towers, cylindrical concrete column supports and 2 timber sections.

The maintenance painting work comprised the complete removal of existing coatings and application of new coatings.

Details of all blast cleaning, ventilation and waste collection equipment, post blast surface contaminant control prior to painting and procedures us.ed to carry out painting works were detailed in advance and one of our most experienced project supervisors assigned the job.

Full containment conditions were applicable to the life of the job effectively preventing emissions at any stage of the project from discharging into the river, onto passing vehicles, pedestrians and other members of the public.

The rigorous process included preliminary cleaning, oil and grease removal, abrasive blast cleaning, blowing down, primer stripe coat, primer first coat, build stripe coat, first build coat, second build coat, first top coat and final top coat. Two-pack full gloss epoxy paint was used for all steel and wrought iron work piers top coats and high build, acrylic modified, two component polyurethane for the top coats of all remaining steel work.
