A major area of work for McElligott Partners is the blasting and painting of all types of storage tanks (many hundreds over the years) with particular emphasis on the oil refinery sector. One such project, of many, was the Mobil Altona Refinery Tank 800.

This project involved high pressure water wash, abrasive blasting, spot priming, filling of pitted steel and spray painting to a thickness of 400 micron.

During the process, regular salt tests (Scat test) were performed and where failures were detected, abrasive blasting supplemented the high pressure washing process.

The process of “paint flooding” was used for pit filling and this was followed by normal stripe coating, priming and top coating.

Throughout the process, along with normal testing regimes, photographs were taken to indicate areas requiring blasting, areas to be spot primed, areas to be pit filled, and areas to be stripe coated. The need for tight control and accurate record keeping is always central to projects undertaken by McElligott’s.
